Sweet Inspiration

Sometimes, I encounter an event that calls for an unexpected color palette. I love mixing and matching unconventional colors, but it can be difficult to find coordinating candies and sweets. This shoot gave me particular trouble. Finding foods that worked with the color palette without creating a gloomy, forlorn feeling was tough.

Anyway, those struggles are exactly why I'm so enthralled with Somewhere Splendid's dessert and candy-based color palettes. This pink, yellow, and white palette has lots of coordinating candies.

Instead of starting with a random palette and then finding desserts to coordinate, these boards help you to visualize exactly the types of treats that go along with your party's theme. Turquoise, bright green, and white also make a lovely combo.

Dessert Table: Inspiration Meets Reality

Back in January, this gorgeous, simple cheese dessert table from Sunday Suppers made the internet rounds and we food and event bloggers completely swooned. I shared lots of the pretty images with you, and Jen of Green Wedding Shoes shared it with her readers, too.

Bride Loro saw the images on Green Wedding Shoes and used it as inspiration for several dessert tables at her wedding. Photog Clayton Austins captured each cheese cloth covered table beautifully.

Although the inspiration photo was taken in a light-filled room, the bride chose the warm glow of several chandeliers.

One table showcased a variety of cookies with typewriter style labels, while others displayed cheeses and cakes.

I really like the way the bride interpreted the inspiration photo to fit within her vision of her nighttime soiree. She captured the easy, homespun feeling of the original table without sacrificing the setting or time of her wedding.

Silhouette Sweets

I came across this silhouette-laden event on Green Wedding Shoes and had to share some of the details with you. Last month, I incorporated hand-cut silhouettes into this dessert table's design, but there are plenty of other ways to incorporate your profile into your event.

Favor bags, silhouette cookies, and invitations in a united, bright hue make for a nostalgically-modern event.

Dessert Meets Design: LOVE Dessert Table Sneak Peek

Since my company tagline is "Dessert Meets Design," I figured I'd give you a sneak peek into my design process.

I always start by creating an inspiration board using details that have already been chosen for the event. Here is the board for this table.

Next, I "map out" the table. I also do a quick sketch of any custom items. For this table, that included the design of the cookies, as well as creating pink-on-pink striped papers and navy logos for different favors. I like to jot down any notes about the theme or "feel" of the event. For this, I scribbled All You Need is Love for the theme and Preppy Pretty to describe the vibe. I wanted to balance the girl-y pink with more masculine navy and tan.

I wanted the plaid pattern on the cookies to be a certain style, more preppy than grunge or lumberjack. So, I sent the baker this for the design.

I love this dessert table posted on 100 Layer Cake. The table was created for 100 Layer Cake's Stationary Social. The little jam jars and chocolate cupcakes are darling. I like that they paired the sweets with cheeses, just like this table.

This inspiration board by The Party Dress is perfect for a couples-only Valentine's party. Serving chocolate in all its forms is sure to please the women in the crowd, and nothing is more romantic than glasses of bubbly with floating cherries.

Crazy Cakes

While searching for inspiration for an upcoming project, I came across this great Brides.com tool. You can create your own cake by customizing the color, decoration, and topper. It's great for trying out wacky combos before meeting with a baker.

I would never have a teal cake with two live birds in a cage as a topper, but it's fun to pretend. Check out Brides Create-A-Cake.

Inspiration Board: Bridal Accents Couture "Love" Trunkshow

I've just started designing a dessert table for Bridal Accents Couture's "Love" Trunkshow, which will feature Enzoani's 2010 bridesmaids "Love" collection. Rather than relying on traditional red and white for this Valentine's-themed event, I opted for pink and navy.

Inspiration Board: Grey, Lilac, & Plum

I mentioned earlier this week that I'd be displaying a table at the Mpls/St. Paul Bridal Party this Sunday. I thought I'd share the inspiration board I created a few months ago to help focus the design for the table. Hope you enjoy a peek into my designing process.

I love the idea of the rebellious bride bucking tradition and choosing a grey dress (even if it makes  granny faint from the very thought of it).

Sweetopia Strikes Again!

I love Sweetopia! The owl cookies I posted for Halloween were adorable, and Marian's polar bears are just as cute. You have to marvel at her icing skill when you realize the cookies are an exact copy of the bears adorning this ribbon. I love their little red and green necklaces.

I've seen this Martha Stewart Weddings dessert buffet a million times, and I still love it. I figured I'd share it in case some of you haven't seen it before. The white, milk, and dark chocolate treats pop against the bright blue linens. There are so many cakes, including two different tiered varieties, that I wouldn't know where to start.
