Week In Review & Designer Cupcakes

Food and fashion, who could ask for anything more? I found these designer cupcakes by Made Fresh Daily on The Demoiselle, and I just love the tiny details captured on each miniature luxury bag. Just look at the "stitching" on that little Gucci bag (pic #4).

Along with these designer delights, we had several other delectable posts this week.

On Sweet Tooth:

We chatted on Facebook about which of these designer cupcake boxes we liked best.

An asparagus cake and these sweet veggie gardens made greenery a little easier to swallow.

I saw a crown jewel cake for the first time, and immediately found a great cookie to pair with it.

We all practiced pronouncing "croquembouche" and learned a little about the towering French dessert.

On The Sweet Life I reviewed Thomasina's Cashew Brittle.

Dessert Meets Design: Chanel Ice Cream

You know that I love when desserts have an element of style or design incorporated into them, and several of Sweet Tooth's posts have been about how the fashion industry and sweet industry combine. Remember this edible wedding dress and this set of couture-inspired cakes? Well, last weekend while cruising the net I came across these Chanel ice cream images.

As far as I know, there isn't an actual Chanel ice cream cone on the market, but these ads are nice to look at anyway.

DIY Gum Ball Necklaces

Every little girl loves candy necklaces, so this gumball version by One Charming Party would be a fabulous treat for the little ones in your life. It's completely DIY-able and also, oddly fashion forward. I have several real necklaces that look very similar! You remember the bracelet version I made last week for my KARE 11 appearance.

Isn't this one of the cutest things ever? I love that the little girl's necklace has one differently-colored "bead."

Package each necklace in a colored jewelry box to really deliver the ultimate presentation.

Here are One Charming Party's directions for this DIY:

1. Using a metal skewer, pierce one side of the gumball. Hold the top of the gumball steady as you guide the skewer (see photo). This will prevent the skewer from slipping off the slick surface of the gumball.

2. Flip the gumball over and pierce another hole directly opposite to the first hole. If you try to poke a hole straight through both sides at once, the gumball will crack.

3. The hardest part is stringing the ribbon. Use a large needle to thread the ribbon through the gumballs. Thinner ribbon is easier to string. Tie a knot between each gumball as you string it.

Editorial Cakes

Fellow Minnesotan Laura Nelli's clutch was featured in L'etoile Magazine's 2010 Spring Editorial. The classic clutch by Nelle is beautiful, and it's well-paired with a hat made of cake! Thea Farrington of Perfect Day Cakes, Marie of Celebration Generation Cakes, and Sheela of Cake Eater Bakery each tailored cakes to compliment the couture.

Icing Meets "I Do": Edible Wedding Dress

Gather and Nest featured this phenomenal wedding dress cake! As I mentioned before, I love when fashion and food mix. This Lukka Sigurdardottir checkered cake is amazing!

Dessert Table: Silver and Black

I love when dessert and design inspire each other, so when a reader told me of her desire to do a black and silver party I was motivated to help her come up with some ideas. Encourage your guests to wear shades of black, grey, silver, and white and create desserts to match their attire. Want to go really unconventional, try hanging your white tree upside down.

A dessert table inspired by a black and silver holiday party seems classically chic, not dark and depressing. Hopefully, Smitten Sugar, this will help you convince your family to get onboard with your upscale Christmas.

Cake Meets Catwalk: Runway-Inspired Confections

It seems obvious that fashion and food go hand-in-hand. For me, if it doesn't look good, I won't even try it whether it's clothes or cake. So, I really loved the couture cakes created by some world-renowned fashion designers. Betsey Johnson's cake mimicked the petticoats in her Spring 2009 collection, while Tracy Reese's cake captured the vibrant watercolor designs featured in her show.

Couture and confection, now that's a happy marriage.
